Daegis Enters the Computer Assisted eDiscovery Race as the Legal Market Reaches the Tipping Point

Daegis, a leading provider of eDiscovery software and services, has joined the rush to Computer Assisted eDiscovery and announced the launch of its Apache Hadoop-based Technology Assisted Review (TAR) solution known as Acumen.   According to Daegis, Acumen is designed to reduce the high costs associated with document review while increasing accuracy and defensibility. Fully integrated into the Daegis eDiscovery Platform, Acumen reduces the number of documents for first-pass review by 70 to 90 percent, cutting first pass review costs by up to 50 percent and substantially increasing the speed and efficiency of the review process.

Daegis is a publicly traded (NASDAQ:DAEG) software company that markets a leading cloud-based eDiscovery Platform for managing Electronically Stored Information (ESI) from processing through production.   As in recent Daegis press releases by Doug Stewart, Vice President of Technology and Innovation at Daegis, “Daegis has long been at the forefront of a data-driven approach to eDiscovery with our SaaS subscription-based platform and advanced data management methodologies like Cross-Matter Management.” “The new Acumen offering, designed and built in collaboration with big data and statistical experts, is the next evolution of this data-driven model. Acumen holistically enables the seamless collaboration of human reviewers and automation technologies, maximizing the strengths of each and significantly reducing the cost and time spent reviewing documents in the process.”

Daegis states that key elements of Acumen include:

  • Transparency. The Acumen dashboard offers users in-depth insight into review progress, accuracy, cost metrics, and the process and data itself.
  • Defensibility without Delays. Acumen has built-in continuous learning and checks and balances designed to increase the defensibility of the production set. For example, if new data is added to an existing population, Acumen automatically resamples and adjusts projections in real-time based on the entire new population without requiring a complete restart of the sampling process.
  • Advanced Iterative Learning. Acumen’s iterative learning is designed to seamlessly integrate technology into well-established document review processes, thereby maximizing human review investment. High resolution data maps are used to train reviewers, who in turn use the maps to train the system to identify responsive documents. The system is designed to identify and push ambiguous documents to the review team, thus maximizing the training benefit of each reviewed document for both human reviewers and the technology.
  • Scalability. Because it is built on the Hadoop architecture, Acumen expands and contracts computing capacity based on current need, enabling streamlined integration of additional data as the matter progresses.
  • Seamless Platform Integration. Acumen is fully integrated into the Daegis eDiscovery Platform enabling users to easily make use of TAR functionality across all current and future matters. Acumen is also available as a stand-alone review solution.

The eDiscovery vendor rush to Computer Assisted eDiscovery is heating up as Daegis is not the only eDiscovery vendor that has recently announced support for Computer Assisted eDiscovery.

In another article published on October 18, 2012, titled, “Catalyst Repository Systems Continues Its Successful Journey as a Leading Provider of Cloud-Based eDiscovery Technology,” Catalyst announced, in partnership with Equivio Zoom, support for Predictive Coding in eDiscovery for Japanese and other international languages.   What was interesting about this announcement is that Catalyst contends that utilizing Tokenization technology they have addressed the issue of getting Predictive Coding to perform at statistically acceptable levels with non-English text such as Japanese.

In the press release regarding this announcement, Mr. Tredennick, Founder and CEO for Catalyst, commented that for years, predictive coding has been more speculation than reality in the difficult Japanese language eDiscovery environment.  He contended that most predictive coding engines experience sub-par performance when Japanese text was processed.  He went on to day that the common understanding among eDiscovery professionals in Japan was that predictive coding only works with English text.

Based upon the rush by eDiscovery vendors to develop and integrate Computer Assisted eDiscovery into their eDiscovery platforms, Computer Assisted eDiscovery has reached the tipping point of being considered a standard requirement for any next generation eDiscovery platform.  The potential reductions in the overall cost of eDiscovery coupled with the increase in productivity throughout the eDiscovery lifecycle have elevated Computer Assisted eDiscovery to a must have for most global 2000 legal departments, law firms and large litigation service providers.  As such, look for eDSG to publish a 2013 Computer Assisted eDiscovery Buyer’s Guide in early 2013.
